why we built this

the friend who
knows the city.

we don't make plans. we make moments that land.

three rooms. walkable. sequenced.

you show up. we handle the rest.

origin

built in calgary, by someone who ran out of ideas and money.

this started because i was the friend everyone called for date-night ideas. i'd shoot back three rooms in walking distance, the right order, what to order at each one — and people would write back the next day saying it was the best night they'd had in months.

the pattern was always the same: they didn't lack rooms. they lacked sequence. calgary has hundreds of incredible places. nobody's missing a venue. they're missing the friend who can pick three of them, in the right order, on the right night.

"i would have figured this out myself, but i had four other things to do this week."

that's the entire pitch. the engine isn't smarter than you. it's just full-time about this in a way that you can't be. it walked the rooms, it knows the bartenders by name, it knows which patio empties at 7 and which one fills at 9. you outsource the curation. the night is still yours.

we're not trying to be opentable. we're not trying to be yelp. we're trying to be the one text you send when you don't know what to do — and the answer that comes back already has the tables held.

four principles

what we won't compromise on.

01
principle one

three rooms. walkable. sequenced.

never one room. never five. always three, always within walking distance, always in the right order — opener, main, close. the format is the product. we won't dilute it because users ask for "just one place."

02
principle two

honest about who it's for.

every venue card tells you who it's not for. "skip if" is louder than "perfect for." we'd rather lose a night than drop you somewhere wrong. anti-recommendations are part of the trust contract.

03
principle three

we hold the tables.

no link-out. no "here's the number, good luck." sloane — our voice concierge — calls every venue, books in your name, sends you the confirmation. opentable when it's there, voice when it isn't. you never make a call.

04
principle four

the night isn't done if plan a fails.

venue closes early. line out the door. mood shifts. tap pivot — backup booked in under a minute, walking directions sent. the format survives a bad room. that's the whole reason this exists instead of a spreadsheet.

the maker

one person. for now.

the plan is built and run by jon howkins — calgary native, ex-product designer, current solo founder. the thing was prototyped in a coffee shop on 17th ave, validated in a notebook, then built room by room over eighteen months.

the engine is small, the team is small, the room is small. the answers are not. if you've got a venue we haven't found, a sequence that works, or a story from a night that landed — hello@theplan.club.
