the plan. ("the app", "we", "us") is a date and outing planning app operated from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. We wrote it to be read, not skimmed past.
The short version: we collect only what the app needs to work — your account email, the preferences you tell us, and the plans you build. We don't collect your device's location, we don't show ads, and we never sell your personal information. Plans are built by our own matching engine, on our own systems.
1. Who is responsible for your information
the plan. is operated by Jon Howkins (sole proprietor), Calgary, Alberta, Canada, who acts as the privacy officer accountable for personal information under this policy. For any privacy question, request, or complaint, contact:

2. What we collect
Information you give us
- Account information. Your email address, a display name (what your friends call you), and a password when you create an account. Passwords are hashed by our authentication provider; we never see or store them in plain text.
- Profile and onboarding answers. Preferences you choose during setup — for example your city and the area of town you usually go out in, who you usually plan with, your relationship goals, the kinds of outings you enjoy, budget comfort, moods, dietary and drink preferences, how you get around, any mobility notes you add, and scheduling preferences. These exist only to personalize the plans the app builds for you.
- Partner details (optional). If you tell the app you plan with a partner, you can add their first name, pronouns, and one thing they love, so plans can be personalized for both of you. Only add information about another person with their knowledge; you can edit or remove it at any time in your profile, or email us and we will remove it.
- Plans and saved content. Itineraries you build, save, complete, or mark as done, including plan names, stops, notes, and dates you set.
- Invitations and shared plans. If you invite someone to a plan, we store the invitation details you enter (such as a name) so the invitation works. Sharing a plan generates a link; anyone with that link can view the shared plan details.
- Email sign-ups. If you ask to be notified about a feature, we store the email you provide for that purpose only.
- Support messages. If you contact us, we keep the correspondence so we can help you.
Information collected automatically
- Usage analytics. We may collect anonymized or pseudonymous product usage events (for example, which screens are used and which features are tapped) to understand what to improve. See "Analytics" below.
- Basic technical data. Standard technical logs from our infrastructure, such as IP address, device type, operating system version, app version, and crash or error information.
What we do not collect
- No precise location. The app does not access your device's GPS or location services. Venue locations shown in the app come from our own venue database, not from tracking you.
- No contacts, photos, microphone, camera, or health data.
- No advertising identifiers and no ad tracking. The app contains no third-party advertising.
3. How we use your information
- To create and secure your account and sign you in.
- To build, save, and personalize date plans based on the preferences you set.
- To power invitations and shared plans you choose to send.
- To understand aggregate product usage so we can improve the app.
- To respond to support requests and important account notices.
- To comply with legal obligations.
We do not sell or rent personal information to anyone — not to advertising networks, not to data brokers, ever — and we do not use your information for third-party advertising or profiling unrelated to the app.
4. Who we share information with
We share personal information only with the service providers that run the app, listed below, and never for their own marketing:

We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of our users or the public. If the app's ownership ever changes, personal information may be transferred as part of that transaction, and this policy will continue to apply to it.
5. Where your information is stored (cross-border transfer)
Our service providers store and process data on servers located in the United States. This means your personal information is transferred outside Canada, and while it is there it is subject to the laws of that jurisdiction — including the possibility that courts, law enforcement, or national security authorities in that country could access it. We use contractual protections with each provider to require a level of protection comparable to what Canadian privacy law requires.
6. How long we keep information
- Account data, profile, and plans: kept while your account is active.
- When you delete your account: your account record and associated personal information are deleted from our production systems, and any residual copies in encrypted backups expire within 30 days.
- Notify-me emails: kept until the feature launches and the notification is sent, or until you ask us to remove yours.
- Analytics events: retained in pseudonymous form and deleted or aggregated within 24 months.
- Support emails: kept up to 24 months so we have context if you contact us again.
7. Your rights and choices
Under Canadian privacy law (PIPEDA and Alberta's Personal Information Protection Act), you have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you and ask how it has been used and disclosed.
- Correct information that is inaccurate or incomplete.
- Withdraw consent to our collection, use, or disclosure of your information, subject to legal or contractual restrictions — note that some features (or the app itself) may not work without certain information.
- Delete your account at any time, directly in the app: Profile → Settings (the gear icon) → Delete account. This is available to every user and does not require contacting us — though you can also email us and we will do it for you.
- Complain. Contact us first at hello@theplan.club and we will respond within 30 days. If you are not satisfied, you may contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta.
8. Security
All data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and encrypted at rest by our database provider. Access to production data is limited to the operator. Row-level security policies restrict each account to its own records. No system is perfectly secure, but if we ever become aware of a breach creating a real risk of significant harm, we will notify affected users and the appropriate privacy authorities as required by law.
9. Children
the plan. is designed for adults planning dates and outings and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will delete it.
10. Analytics opt-out
Analytics are used solely to improve the app and are never used for advertising. If you would like your analytics data disassociated or deleted, email us and we will action it within 30 days.
11. Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the effective date above and notify you in the app before the changes take effect. Continued use of the app after that notice means you accept the updated policy.
